To give the kids a chance to connect, I suggested a pyjama party in the A-frame to Léon. He said yes and took charge.

In the evening, when night fell, the cabin turned into an open-air cinema. A not-quite-white sheet stretched as a screen. The projector. Inflatable mattresses lined up on the floor. A bag of popcorn, some sweets.

And the candy bar. With a handwritten menu and an entrance ticket for each guest. Tonight’s programme: Lego Movie.

They didn’t know each other that morning. By Sunday, Léon was already planning the next one — and expanding the candy bar, because the selection wasn’t good enough according to the boys.

When the kids were settled in their sleeping bags, we joined their mum under the porch. We could hear them laughing from the cabin.

The night sorted itself out. Anaïs and Léon upstairs in the mezzanine. The two boys and their mum downstairs. Me in the hammock under the porch. SamSam outside, in her spot.
